The greatest diameter of the extinguisher is in the middle of the cabinet where the lines of the "X" intersect. Individuals tend to strike the panel here. If the extinguisher rests against the panel it may be harder or take longer to break. The grid pattern removes this visual cue so that the extinguisher can be potentially accessed faster.
